Laura’s review of our Pulse Self Defense Workshop – January 10, 2016

Pulse sponsored a Self Defense class on Sunday led by Paul Thomas,  Pulse’s Martial Arts instructor and personal trainer. CJ and Demetrius, students of Paul’s also helped out. Paul started the class by saying we will focus on awareness, visual focus, and body patterns throughout the two hours. He then gave us some tips regarding being aware of your surroundings when you park, choosing spaces in well lit areas in view of entrances and exits, and keeping one hand free when walking to and from your car. He also suggested not parking next to windowless vans, especially in isolated areas, but I already knew that one. 😀 We then moved into the active phase of class, partnering up in groups of two. I was lucky enough to partner with Dawn! Paul showed us how to break out of a cross body grab, which we all tried with a little bit of giggling. When I asked him a question, Demetrius demonstrated by holding my wrist and, even though he was very gentle and polite, I realized how much stronger a grown man is compared to me and I started taking the class much more seriously. Still, with Paul’s techniques, I could break out of every one of Demetrius’ holds. I’ve gotta be honest, I was very uncomfortable when we practiced breaking out of the various choke holds. It’s simply terrifying to have someone’s hands around your neck, even under friendly circumstances. CJ clearly took his role as demonstrator very seriously, putting his hands around Paul’s neck, who just continued talking through a restricted voice. CJ actually left fingerprints on Paul’s...

Making Heads and Tails of Sleeping

Submitted by Terri Rodda, Physical Therapist Sleep can be a very confusing topic. Extensive marketing for pillows, mattresses, and sleep positions contributes to the confusion. Let’s try to get to the bottom of it. What factors contribute to quality sleep? Let’s start with proper alignment. There are 3 important curves on the body, one at the neck, one in the middle of the back and one in the lower back. In general, the goal is maintain the natural position of these curves during sleep. Misalignment during sleep can put stresses and strains on the body and affect how you feel the next day. It can also make it difficult to relax to fall asleep. Fatigue, sleep apnea, back pain and heartburn are some of the problems created by poor sleep postures and a bad night’s sleep. A Pub Med search reveals numerous studies on mattresses and pillows and the effect on sleep quality. In summary, the research supports sleeping on a medium firm mattress and using a pillow of approximately 10 cm in height. The research did not support the use of feather pillows or expensive highly engineered pillows. As for sleep postures, none of us sleep in the same position all night, if we did we would all end up with bed sores. That being said there are some sleep postures better than others. Sleeping on your back makes it easy for your head and spine to maintain a neutral position and dermatologists say it reduces wrinkles. Sleeping on your back with a pillow elevating your head slightly has also been shown to reduce acid reflux. However, back...

Osteoporosis Q & A

Osteoporosis Q & A

Osteoporosis Q & A – Dr. Anu Sharma   Pulse Fitness is dedicated to “getting you there intact.” That means helping you live life to the fullest, overcome pain or injury, reach your peak performance and providing you with useful, important information. For Osteoporosis Awareness Month, we are bringing attention to the “silent disease.” According to the National Institutes of Health, Osteoporosis “progresses without symptoms until a fracture occurs.”   Generally speaking, throughout an individual’s lifetime, bone is constantly changing, old bone is replaced by new bone with bone mass peaking in a person’s thirties. After that, old bone removal exceeds the formation of new bone.   We sat down for a discussion about Osteoporosis with Dr. Anu Sharma, a Rheumatologist with Center for Rheumatic Diseases. Dr. Sharma is board certified in adult Rheumatology, is trained in adult and pediatric Rheumatology and is an active member at Pulse Fitness.   Lisa Platnik, Owner, Pulse Fitness (PF): When should women start thinking about “setting-up” their bodies up to fight against Osteoporosis? Dr. Sharma (DS): Both women and men should always be thinking about bone health. In most cases, when a woman hits her 30s, she will have the maximum amount of bone density for her lifetime. After that, a woman will begin losing approximately 1-percent of her bone mass a year. Once she hits menopause, she will lose approximately 2.5-percent of bone mass a year. It’s why women have more of a problem earlier in their lives then men. Men do not start with a rapid bone mass loss until their mid to late sixties.   PF: What does “setting...

Recipe: Breakfast Muffins

Recipe: Breakfast Muffins

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for so many reasons! Not only does it kick start your metabolism after being asleep for several hours, it energizes you for your day ahead! Because this meal makes such an impact on us, it is extra important to squeeze in as many healthy and delicious ingredients as possible! This is one of my favorite recipes to throw together for a quick and tasty meal that leaves me full for hours! The best thing about this recipe is that it is fully customizable! Simply swap out the fresh basil with cilantro, red bell peppers for jalapeños and use mexican cheese and you have a Mexican inspired breakfast instead of Italian style. Bonus – you can build a different type of ‘muffin’ for each day of the week so you don’t get bored! The possibilities are endless! Another fun way to eat these are topped with your favorite sauce – marinara, salsa, guacamole.. Play around until you find what works for you and your taste buds! ENJOY! Veggie Baked Eggs  ● 6 eggs or 1 cup egg whites (shown in the pic) ● 1/2 cup grated reduced fat cheese of choice (mozzarella, cheddar, colby, monterey jack..) ● ~ 1/2 cup grape tomatoes, sliced ● ~1 cup red bell peppers, mushrooms or veggie of choice (raw or cooked) ● 8 fresh basil leaves, sliced ● 1 cup baby spinach or other greens ● salt and pepper ● canola spray or oil 1. Favorites: Winter Weather Gear

Winter is coming and we’re not talking about the hit show on HBO, Game of Thrones. The temperature is dropping and if you read the Farmer’s Almanac or watch the news, the DMV could be in for another doozy of a winter. But, we know many of you still want to pound the pavement – even if it is covered in snow and ice.  So, here are our top 3 winter running gear essentials for the guys and the gals. Ladies: Protect your assets – Your base layer starts with covering your assets so be picky when choosing your bra and underwear. We love this bra from Patagonia. It has super-wicking potential so by keeping you dry, it will help keep you warm. And there’s a whole rainbow of colors to choose from. Legs for days – You want to be bundled up but not look like the abdominal snowman coming down the street. That’s why we love these pants from Columbia; lightweight but warm enough to protect you from the elements. They can be yours for $65. Total turtle – Bring back the turtlenecks! We are digging this look from Under Armor. We love the colors, the thumbholes and the breathable fabric to keep you warm without overheating. And the neck has vents so you can pull it over your nose on those super chilly days and still breathe! Gents: Jammin’ – Want to jam to Bob Marley and his island music when it’s below freezing out? It’s all possible with these wrap around earmuffs. Keep your jams and your ears happy. Modern mittens – Scroll through your tunes...

This exercises four groups of muscles in your hips, which are important to preserving balance. Get up from your chair 10 times in a row without leaning on arm rests. Alternate between your feet in wide stance and close together. Make it more difficult by closing your eyes. Put five cones (or other objects) in a straight line and weave between them. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Put your right foot in front of your left, and shift your weight onto your right foot so that the left heel is off the ground. Do this 10 times. Repeat with left foot in front of the right foot. Variations: Do the exercise alternating feet or stepping backward or with your eyes...

Pulse Holiday Poem!

Over the holidays, our wonderful members brought a smile to our face and a long laugh with this hilariously sweet poem that they wrote for us! We had to share it with you all!  Thank you to each of them for the continued laugh through the seasons!  Twas days before Christmas and all through the gym All the creatures were sweating in hopes they’d stay thin. The cardio machines all moved with great force In the hopes that our bodies would stay the right course.   Lisa and O still taught all their classes, while each of us worked so hard on our asses. And we in our spandex all covered in sweat had just hatched an idea of what we would get   A present for Lisa and one for Ochieng It came to our head with a loud, clashing bang. Away to each member I ran like a flash, And everyone happily offered up cash.   The sun still hiding on the horizon below, Because only type A’s at this hour will show. And what’s so amazing at this early hour Is feeling the Pulse high-energy power   With Lisa and O so lively and quick We knew this was the place for us before six. More rapid we cycled, the faster we ran, And they shouted our names and the cheering began:   Now Karen! Now Betty! Now, Tamara and John! On, Lisa! On Katie! On, Kirstin and Dawn!   Ride hard for 3 minutes, At least to your eight . Push harder and harder And raise that heart rate!   As the sun finally peaks...

Reduce hunger: Currently, around 50 million Americans are considered “food insecure”, or...

Fall’s Most Versatile Fruit: Apples!

Though the rain was unappealing this weekend, I spent the little bit of dry weather that we had apple picking! Butler’s Orchard is a wonderful spot for all your favorite fresh Fall produce and goodies! They have apples, pumpkins, raspberries, fresh baked favorites and more! You cannot go wrong taking the time to visit this Orchard during this season, or any season! Check out their website here. Apples are easily my favorite fruit and when I can get them fresh – literally right off the tree – I cannot get enough! Apples can be used in so many ways and in so many different dishes – sweet & savory! Enjoy these recipes and go get some fresh apples when you can. Cardio on an Empty Stomach – Good or Bad?

A recent article in an International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) magazine discussed the benefits of trying cardio workouts on an empty stomach: “Waking up after an eight-hour fast, your body’s stored glycogen (muscle fuel) is somewhat depleted. Doing cardio in this state improves your body’s ability to burn fat because the lack of available glycogen forces your body to use fat as fuel. A study at Kansas State University published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise demonstrated that subjects burned a kilogram (2.2 lb) of fat sooner when they exercised in a fasted (empty-stomach) state in the morning than when they did it later in the day or evening. The Takeaway: Don’t do a long, intense workout or a weight workout on an empty stomach, but a light to moderate cardio routine first thing in the morning may be a great fat-burning kickstarter.”  ...

Golf Digest: How to Improve Golf Posture

Fitness Friday: H is the letter to remember to improve your golf posture By Ron Kaspriske While going through the Golf Digest archives, I recently found a good article I did with fitness trainer Don Saladino, who co-owns the Drive 495 (@drive495) golf gym in Manhattan with his brother Joe. The reason I bring it up is because I’m often asked what areas of the body should be focal points of any golf workout. Everyone immediately thinks of the core muscles as a good starting point and it’s true, you can’t go wrong strengthening the belt of muscles that run from your chest down to your knees (think a pitcher’s strike zone). But Don and I came up with an easier way to remember which muscles matter most in terms of training for golf. We called it the Three Hs: hamstrings, hips and hunchback. Granted, the last one is an issue and not a body part, but it made it easier to remember the muscles that golfers often neglect. The Three Hs are especially important in terms of addressing a ball with good posture and maintaining that posture throughout the swing.Whether it’s physical limitations or fatigue, many amateurs eventually find themselves more and more hunched over as they address a golf ball. This comes from a rounding of the back known as “C” posture, because the spine bends into a shape like the letter. They also get more hunched over because their hamstrings and hip flexors are fatiguing. These same golfers will then thrust their hips toward the ball as they start the downswing and stand nearly upright at impact. They do this for...

55th Anniversary of Billboard’s Hot 100 Cycle Mix

When Billboard introduced weekly music charts in 1940, there were sales charts and there were airplay charts. These separate charts measuring the popularity of singles continued going their separate ways until Aug. 4, 1958, when Billboard introduced the first chart that blended sales and airplay data. Named the “Hot 100,” it has continued to this day, known around the world for being the definitive U.S. singles weekly report. The Pilates Edge: Pilates for Men

There are many myths surrounding Pilates.  Among the most damaging misperceptions is that Pilates is an exercise discipline for women.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Though some of Joseph Pilates’s first students were dancers and dancers have long reaped the benefits of Pilates, the discipline is in no way gender specific.  Pilates builds core strength and improves flexibility and range of motion–outcomes that benefit men and women alike.  In fact, Pilates for men is becoming increasingly common as male celebrities, performers, and professional athletes are turning to the discipline to enhance their stamina, agility, and athletic performance. So who are the men doing Pilates?  Professional dancers, of course, but also leaders in theNBA, MLB, PGA, NFL, and more.  Famous men who have begun  to reap the benefits of Pilates include: Sting – professional musician and performer Kobe Bryant – NBA Jason Kidd – NBA Curt Schilling – MLB Tiger Woods – PGA Phil Michelson – PGA Rocco Mediate – PGA Ruben Brown – NFL Gary Bracket – NFL These athletes and performers have seen so much improvement in health and performance from Pilates that entire teams are starting to take note of the benefits of Pilates for men.  According to a USA Today article entitled “Male Athletes Get No Pain, Big Gain from Pilates,” the strength coach of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets saw the difference that Pilates made for superstar player Jason Kidd, and purchased Pilates equipment for the team’s weight room.  In fact, the article says that the team finds Pilates to be so instrumental in the health and performance of its players that they had a leading Pilates...

Functional Movement Screening (FMS) at Pulse

This summer we will be implementing the use of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS).  FMS has been shown to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, like broken and fractured bones, torn ligaments and sprained tendons that prevent participation in sport and fitness activities. Currently, FMS is being used in the NFL, NHL, MLB, the Military and College Athletics. We think of all of our Pulse members as elite athletes who deserve the same care as the professionals! What is FMS? The FMS was developed by a physical therapist, Gray Cook, and athletic trainer, Lee Burton to identify limitations and inefficient movement patterns. It is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function. The screen consists of seven movements which combine coordination, mobility and stability. As the client is put through these movement patterns, asymmetries and limitations are easily identified. Early identification of these issues can prevent future injuries. The FMS generates the Functional Movement Screen Score, which is used to target problems and track progress.  A score less than 13 out of a possible 21 indicates a high risk for injury. This scoring system is directly linked to the most beneficial corrective exercises to restore mechanically sound movement patterns.  The FMS can be applied at any fitness level and takes approximately 15 minutes to administer.  A customized training program can be created based on an individual’s unique score. How Can FMS Help You? Pulse wants to help you stay healthy and injury free which is one of the reasons we have chosen to implement FMS into our fitness center.  Below is a list...

Play Better, Play Without Pain, Play Longer, Enjoy the Game More

Sports Monger Golf recently wrote an article describing what pro and amateur golfers are starting to realize for their game: the importance of not just fitness, but golf fitness. It is a new direction that allows you to play better and most importantly longer.  Below is a sample from the article and is something many in the golf industry are now echoing. Years ago people made fun of golfers because of their lack of fitness, but with Tiger Woods’ rise in popularity came a new-found respect for golf fitness. In the past there were some golfers who lifted weights and worked out to gain strength and muscle tone, but none of them were champions. Now, as Tiger shows that being in good shape can add to performance, more and more players are doing this, including Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Lexi Thompson and even Phil Mickelson just to name a few. Golfers now realize that being fit can add distance to their game and can also help them with the endurance necessary to play 18 holes of golf, remaining focused and without getting overly tired. While research shows that all the major muscle groups are involved with your golf swing, explosive functional power with stability is key. The proper combination of weight training, cardio, and flexibility should be used to get the body in top physical condition for golf.  Golf Fitness is now offered at Pulse Fitness. Get your FREE 30 minute assessment by contacting us at 301-656-0500.  —...

Best of Summer Flavors!

Nothing is tastier than fresh summer produce cooked to perfection! Two of my favorite vegetables this time of year are asparagus and leeks. Right now is the perfect time to enjoy these – they are bright, crunchy and full of health benefits! Care2.com lists some of the health benefits of asparagus! Asparagus is a good source of fiber and protein, both essential for good digestion and immunity. It contains a number of anti-inflammatory compounds that protect you from type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It has antioxidants, including one called glutathione, which is known to protect the skin from sun damage, pollution and the effects of aging. The Vitamin K in asparagus is excellent for healthy blood clotting and strengthening bones. Asparagus contains a unique carb called inulin, which remains undigested until it reaches the large intestine, where it helps to absorb nutrients better, and cut the risk of colon cancer. Good news for those struggling to manage their blood sugar: asparagus is a rich source of B vitamins, which are known to regulate blood sugar levels. Green asparagus is much more beneficial than white, say reports. The goodness is in the stalk, which contains vitamin A for better vision, potassium for smooth kidney functioning, and trace minerals that help boost immunity. Not sure how to pic the perfect bunch of asparagus? Look for bright green stalks with deep purple tips!   I love any kind of asparagus – but I especially love it paired with leeks and lemon! I put together a simple saute of these a couple night ago paired with fresh Halibut that was roasted with lemon...

The Benefits of Pilates

The Benefits of Pilates Pilates can really make a difference in your health without taking a toll on your body. A refreshing mind-body workout By emphasizing proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and concentration on smooth, flowing movement, you become acutely in tune with your body. You actually learn how to control its movement. In Pilates the quality of movement is valued over quantity of repetitions. Proper breathing is essential, and helps you execute movements with maximum power and efficiency. Last but not least, learning to breathe properly can reduce stress. Develop a strong core – flat abdominals and a strong back Pilates exercises develop a strong “core,” or center of the body. The core consists of the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Control of the core is achieved by integrating the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle. Gain long, lean muscles and flexibility More conventional or traditional workouts are weight bearing and tend to build short, bulky muscles – the type most prone to injury. Pilates elongates and strengthens, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility. A body with balanced strength and flexibility is less likely to be injured. Create an evenly conditioned body, improve sports performance, and prevent injuries In the same vein, a lot of these same conventional workouts tend to work the same muscles. This leads weak muscles tend to get weaker and strong muscles tend to get stronger. The result is muscular imbalance – a primary cause of injury and chronic back pain. Pilates conditions the whole body, even the ankles and feet. No muscle group is over trained...

Better Breakfast Muffins

Sopranos Themed Pulse Groove and Cycle – Sunday, June 30th

To honor the wonderful actor James Gandolfini we dedicated our Sunday cycle class to the television drama The Sopranos.  Every song played was used on the series.  David Chase the creator of the show personally selected all of the show’s music with producer Martin Bruestle, music editor Kathryn Dayak and consulted with Steven Van Zandt.   Did you know that the series shares 27 actors with the 1990 Martin Scorsese gangster film Goodfellas, including main characters Lorraine Branco, Michael Imperiolil, and Tony Sirico? Each song is listed below with title, artist and scene from the show.   Tardes de Bolonha – Madredeus Episode 1, Season 1: Dr. Melfi sees Tony at a restaurant. Also, Tony and Carmela are at a restaurant. Woke up this Morning – Alabama 3 A recognizable part of The Sopranos is the program’s opening title sequence. Tony Soprano is seen emerging from the Lincoln Tunneland entering the New Jersey Turnpike. Numerous landmarks in and around Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey, are shown. The sequence ends with Tony pulling into the driveway of his suburban home. Chase has said that the goal of the title sequence was to show that this particular Mafia show was about New Jersey, as opposed to New York, where most such dramas have been set. In the first three seasons, between Tony leaving the tunnel and entering the Turnpike, an image of the World Trade Center towers can be seen in his side rear-view mirror. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, this shot was removed, beginning with the show’s fourth season. In a 2010 issue of TV Guide, the show’s opening title sequence ranked #10 on a list of TV’s top 10 credits sequences, as selected by readers. More Than a Feeling –...
